In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
