TikTok Provides Viewers Power to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the company revealed that it now features over 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a full-scale release. This shift coincides with a surge in content created by AI, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that approximately a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this material is deemed low-quality AI content, a label for substandard, mass-produced content that is frequently nonsensical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that numerous viewers appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to give people the option to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” stated a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

The service announced that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as made with AI. In total, over 100 m media items are uploaded to the service every day, making AI content a relatively small percentage of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be capable of reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the “manage topic” option in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the filter include news, fashion, cosmetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines mandate content makers to label “realistic” artificially created content, and it prohibits malicious fake videos of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

Furthermore, the platform will from now on attach an AI-generated tag to content created with its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is additionally launching a two million dollar educational fund for experts and institutions to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This project will support educational bodies focused on educating computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has supported its content review process, amid controversy over intentions to make redundant hundreds of safety staff in Britain. TikTok is set to eliminate a significant number of roles in its trust and safety department in London, with labor groups and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content before it is viewed by humans. TikTok reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
